To all members of the HWS community, We encourage you to sign this petition to take a stand for academic freedom and integrity at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS).  Along with other colleges and universities across the nation, President Gearan and HWS are being asked by the Trump administration to sign the so-called Compact for Academic Excellence by October 20, 2025.  The Compact offers priority access to federal funding in return for agreement to adhere to the federal government’s vision for higher education.  The White House has issued vague threats of retribution for those who do not sign.  Schools are being extorted and pushed into backroom agreements that surrender control over who can learn, teach, and express themselves on campus. Now more than ever, it is important that we take a stand for academic freedom and integrity so that President Gearan and the Board of Trustees know that the HWS community expects the Colleges to reject the Compact.
