University of Michigan: Reject the federal government's political control
To: President Grasso and the U-M Board of Regents
We, the undersigned University of Michigan alumni and other members of the community, affirm the long-standing principles that support strong and independent higher-education institutions in the United States. These include:
- Academic freedom and open inquiry
- Institutional autonomy in academic and administrative decisions
- Nonpartisan stewardship of research, teaching, and public service
- Evidence-based policymaking and predictable federal support
The Trump administration's campaign against colleges and universities represents an encroachment on academic freedom and university autonomy. We have concerns about the potential effects of these initiatives on the ability of colleges and universities to fulfill their educational and research missions.
We call for transparent analysis, broad consultation across the university community, and careful consideration before implementing any significant federal policy changes affecting the University of Michigan.
By signing this statement, we affirm our commitment to academic freedom, institutional independence, and the advancement of higher education for the public good.
Why is this important?
The Trump Administration is trying to place the University of Michigan and colleges across the country under political control. Join with Maize and Blue Courage to tell President Domenico Grasso and the Board of Regents to protect U-M academic freedom and independence from the federal government.
